A Look into Legal Aspects During the Time of Nazi Germany
Presented by: Legal Historian Eric Muller
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:The eclipsing horror of the genocide committed by Nazi Germany between 1941 and 1945 can blind us to the facts that years of non-genocidal repressions preceded it and that lawyers were integral to the design and maintenance of the system. This presentation examines the functions that legal professionals served in the Third Reich and highlights the all-too-ordinary motivations behind the choices, influences, and decisions made by the attorneys.
DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER BIO:Professor Eric L. Muller is a legal historian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is an award-winning teacher, has written award-winning books and created award-winning museum exhibits. Since 2011, Professor Muller has served as a faculty member with the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, a program that fosters development of young professionals through a deep encounter with the culpability of German professionals for the development and implementation of the Nazi state between 1933 and 1945. In 2018, he became the organization’s Academic Director. Professor Muller's research dives into the underpinnings behind the roles of German professionals in perpetrating the Holocaust as well as the mass removal and imprisonment of Japanese Americans in World War II.
